  History

The first written accounts of the Island of Rab can be found in the works of the antic writers. However, it is quite certain that people lived here much earlier. The remains of the late Paleolithic tools in the area of Lopar are the proof that the Paleolithic man lived here.

This Paleolithic man was superseded by the more advanced Neolithic man, but at the end of the Neolithic period the Libums arrive to this parts, so it is realistic to presume that the present port and the city of Rab were started at that time.

The oldest information on Rab can be found in the writings of the several Greek and Roman geographers. In those writings Rab is mentioned as Arba, Arva, Arbia, Arbitana. The origin of that name can not be established with certainty, but it is supposed that translated from the Indo-European root of ARB it means umber, dark, forested which is also characteristic for the island today. That name was adapted by the current inhabitants, the Slavic Croats, to their own language and was transformed into Rab.

It is very likely that the name of Rab dates all the back to the 7^th century a.d., just after the arrival of the first Slavs to the island, however the oldest known document with the Croatian name Rab is a Latin decree about the foundation of the St. Euphemia abbey, that is kept in it’s museum, and it dates to the 15^th century.

Die ersten schriftlichen Daten über die Insel Rab findet man in den Werken der antiken Schriftsteller. Es ist aber ganz sicher, dass der Mensch auf der Insel Rab schön viel eher gelebt hat. Die Funde der spätpaläolitischen Werkzeuge im Bereich Lopar beweisen, dass hier der paläolitische Mann gelebt hat, über den es sehr wenig Informationen gibt.

Diesem paläolitischen Urmenschen folgten die fortschrittlichen neolitischen Einwanderer nach, aber zu Ende des Neolithikums siedelten Libumi an, so dass die reale Voraussetzung ist, dass zu dieser Zeit der heutige Hafen und der Ort Rab zu entstehen begannen.

Die ältesten Daten über die Insel Rab findet man in den Schriften ein paar griechischer und römischer Geographen. In diesen Schriften wird Rab unter Namen Arba, Arva, Arbia, Arbitana erwähnt. Die Herkunft dieses Namens kann nicht sicher festgestellt werden, es wird aber vorausgesetzt, dass in der Übersetzung der indoeuropäischen  Wurzel ARB, dies finster, dunkel, waldig bedeuten würde, was auch heute für diese Insel charakteristisch ist. Diesen Namen haben die heutigen Einwohner, slawische Kroaten, dem Geist ihrer Sprache angepasst und ihn in Rab geändert.

Es ist wahrscheinlich, dass die Bennenung Rab schon aus dem 7. Jahrhundert unserer Zeitrechnung stammt, bzw. gleich nach der Ankunft der ersten Slawen auf die Insel, jedoch ist das älteste bekannte Dokument, in dem man die kroatische Benennung Rab findet, die lateinische Urkunde über die Gründung des Klosters Hl. Euphemia (Sv. Eufemije), in dem ein Museum bewahrt wird, und aus dem 15. Jahrhundert stammt.
